The #1 Reason To Leave Your Water Heater Repairs To The Professionals
My wife is one of those people who enjoys her showers to be that fatal combination of extra long and boiling hot. While I don’t understand how she can not only survive but thrive in these conditions, I don’t fault her too much for it.
This has the tertiary effect of making every problem with our water heater a matter of life or death. Take this latest instance that happened just a few weeks ago as an example:
It was a Saturday evening and my wife was just getting home from her late afternoon pilates class. I was doing some work in the garage when she arrived, and she refused to approach me because she had gotten so sweaty from the workout.
I told her to go wash off, and was once again left blissfully alone to continue my weekend chores. A few minutes later, however, I was put into a panic by a scream coming from the bathroom.
I rushed inside the house, ready to face whatever danger that had caused the shrieks that were getting ever more shrill. I tracked them down to our master bathroom, where my wife was now swearing angrily rather than yelling.
Relieved to find her angry rather than in peril, I asked her what she was doing screaming like she was being attacked. Apparently, she hadn’t tested the water before plunging into the shower stream, and got a face and body full of ice cold water.
After chiding her, I tested the water and found that it wasn’t heating up. I went back to the garage to check the water heater and pilot light, but found nothing out of the ordinary.
My wife demanded that I call a plumber immediately to get things working as soon as possible. I, on the other hand, felt that I could make the repair on my own.
Setting to work researching the issue, I came to the conclusion that we had a faulty thermostat. An easy fix – if you had the parts.
I found the appropriate replacement thermostat for the water heater model and ordered them, figuring it should only take a few days to arrive and make the switch myself. At the time, it seemed like a more expedient solution considering how long it usually took to get a plumber to our house.
And so we waited…and waited…and waited some more. My wife grew increasingly irate as the days wore on, but I was now set on this course of action and settled in for some nasty fights.
The package finally arrived and I set to work right away. Little did I know that this repair would take the better part of two days due to my lack of experience. With the new part installed, I replaced the heater and was feeling very proud of myself as I waited for the fix to take effect.
I would be stuck waiting a while, because nothing happened. The thermostat hadn’t been the issue, and we had waited weeks for nothing. Feeling thoroughly chastised for my hubris, I called up a San Diego local company – California Plumbing Services – while my wife angrily looked on.
As it turned out, we should have called California Plumbing from the get-go. The team was able to get to our house within the week and determine the actual cause of the problem with little to no difficulty.
My lesson learned was to never assume your general skills as a handyman are universally applicable, and that they never really can replace the hard-earned experience of a professional.
